I just don't think Machado is a $300M player. San Diego just guaranteed themselves to not win a championship for the next decade. Unless your team has the ownership to drop 200+M a year in salaries, which only the big markets can do, you never seem to win if you sign a high profile guy like this. the talent around him will need to be lower to stay within a smaller budget and the team as a whole will probably not win as many games as they are expecting next year.
Yeah it reminds me of the Stanton deal with the Marlins. I love that the Padres of all teams signed him just for a change of pace, but I agree, baseball of all sports is the worst in which to allocate that much money to one player. Even more so then football, no one player is going to make a difference, especially when there are so many other holes they need to fill.
Now given, the value of the franchise just went up a bunch, kind of like when the Mariners got Cano and it will most likely increase atttendance at least in the short term but you are most likely correct in saying that the Padres just put a limit on their success going forward. Unless of course, they are just willing to spend a ton of money for the next decade, something that I would be very surprised about if they did.
